3 Best Vegetarian Restaurants Across AmericaFood The List
Vegetarians are no longer limited to sides and salads when dining out nowadays. If you're trying to stay plant-based, or just want to branch out, here are three flavorful vegetarian restaurants to dig into across America.
1. The Chicago Diner – Chicago, Illinois
The Chicago Diner is known for their vegetarian comfort food, which uses meat substitutes like tempeh and seitan. Menu items include country fried steak, burgers, and even a Ruben sandwich. This place isn’t just for vegetarians, though! Meat eaters dine there, too – and apparently their carnivorous clients love going meatless. “If you're good a seasoning it,” the owner explains, “you can make it taste like duck, or chicken, or pork. We're really good at it." This sounds yummy in our tummies!
2. La Botanica – San Antonio, Texas
From comfort food to spicy Tex-Mex, La Botanica in San Antonio, Texas lands at number two on our list. Beginning as a home kitchen pop-up, La Botanica cooked its ways into the restaurant biz with a Kickstarter campaign. Now the restaurant’s owner Rebel Mariposa is able to serve hungry vegans her favorite dishes – like a signature taco dish called There's Nothing Fishy About These Fish Tacos. The "fish" in this recipe is sautéed oyster mushrooms paired with veggies from their on-site garden. This meal sounds like a total “catch!”
3. The Homegrown Smoker – Portland, Oregon
And finally – vegan BBQ?! You read that right! The Homegrown Smoker in Portland, Oregon slides in at number three on our list. For owner Jeff Ridabock, it's about all the health and ethical treatment of animals – but it's also about flavor! “We do all traditional BBQ one hundred percent vegan,” Jeff explains. “I never thought I could enjoy something called vegan BBQ, but I went for it anyway, and I'll put it up there with any BBQ I've ever had." Whether it's with soybeans or plant-based proteins, his goal is to create BBQ that omnivores, vegans, and vegetarians can all agree on. Who wouldn’t agree on delicious food?!
Give these marvelously meatless restaurants a try if you’re ever in their neck of the woods.
