3 essential dog training tips from Cesar MillanEntertainment The List
In the new Nat Geo Wild series Cesar Millan's Dog Nation, The Dog Whisperer and his son Andre travel the country helping dogs and humans alike. While out promoting the show we got a chance to sit down with them. Kristina Guerrero asked the king of dog training and his heir apparent three questions viewers posted on our Facebook page.
1. How to Handle Barking
If a dog is obsessively barking what he's saying is my needs are not physically being met, my mind is not being challenged, so when a dog is frustrated by the lack of exercise and when a dog is bored by the lack of mental challenge, then you're going to have barking. This is a side-effect of what we are not doing. Play with your pup! That’s a fun fix.
2. How to Handle Jumping
A lot of times people love when their dog jumps on them, but not when they jump on other people, so they'll train them to jump on them and the dog doesn't know not to jump on new people. Sorry, you can't have it both ways. Cesar's big tip about jumping is to get them moving another way because the dog doesn't have the exercise that is needed so it releases the energy by jumping.
3. How to Stop Peeing Inside
You have to go back to basics and neutralize the odors. That's #1 so the dog doesn't get inspired by the smells, Then you have to regulate the intake of water and make sure to take them outside regularly. You have to follow a certain structure so the dog knows they are going to drink and then be let out.
