3 Things You Should Do at Work to Help Your Body Stay HealthyLifestyle The List
Having a desk to work at helps pay the bills, but it can also wreak havoc on your body. Between staring at a screen all day, the slouch-inducing office chair, and the coworkers sniffling and coughing around you, it can be hard to be 100% when you head into the office. So, Kristina Guerrero sat down with Dr. Natasha Bhuyan, MD to find out how you can stay healthy while hard at work.
1. Take Care of Your Peepers
According to Dr. Bhuyan, most Americans that work a desk job sit in front of their computers for about 7 hours a day which can lead to eye strain, headaches, dry eyes, and blurred vision. So use the 20-20-20 rule to keep your eyes in top top shape.
Every 20 minutes, walk away from your desk and look at something that's 20 feet away, for about 20 seconds. This will give your eyes enough of a break to readjust to the real world and reduce your chance of getting eye strain – so you don't bring eye problems home from work with you.
2. Watch Your Posture
Growing up, your parents probably told you not to slouch, and, while you might hate to admit it, they were right. If you aren't properly set up at your desk, bad posture and repetitive motions could lead to you being afflicted with ailments like consistent pains in your neck and back, or worse, carpel tunnel or tennis elbow.
Dr. Bhuyan says you can avoid these pricks and pains by doing some "desk-ercises". If you're feeling brave, and have the room, do some wall squats, sit ups, or lunges for a couple of minutes. Or, get up from your desk and do some stretching – or even, take a quick stroll around your office. It's important to keep your body moving during the day so your it doesn't lock up, and the endorphins that come with stretching and exercise can help revitalize your body as well.
3. Turn Down the Stress Knob
We all have those work weeks where it seems, every day, something's going wrong, bringing on waves of stress. But when that stress wave comes, it also tends to bring elevated cortisol levels with it, which can be big factors in reasons for weight gain. So, if you find yourself getting stressed with work, leave your desk for a few minutes and calm down.
And try to avoid snacking out of stress too. A bag of chips now and then isn't terrible, but if you're constantly snacking throughout the day, you're not doing your body any favors. So, bring some of your favorite healthy snacks to work: fruits, granola, yogurt, you get the idea. We're not saying you can't have a couple of Mary in accounting's homemade cookies – just don't get carried away.
