Chris and Heidi Powell Reveal All Their Secrets for Staying Fit After 40
FitList Lifestyle The ListBeing in your 40s doesn't have to keep you from hitting your goal weight, or killing it in your next workout. We spoke to none other than Chris and Heidi Powell, who gave us their best tips to get in the best shape of your life after 40.
1. Respect the Warmup
Warming up before a workout is extremely important to prevent injury. When you warm up properly and take care of your body, you can prevent any pain that may come afterwards. As you age, hormone levels decrease. So make sure you warm up those muscles, ligaments, tendons and joints, because they are more susceptible to injury. You can do some simple, preventive stretches where your body is always moving.
2. High Intensity Interval Training
Also known as "HIIT" training, you can do this workout anywhere by choosing two to five key movements. You then keep circuiting through them for a certain period of time. But whatever you do, make sure you are comfortable and not in too much pain. HIIT will work large muscle groups, especially your legs, glutes, quads and more. This increases your own natural testosterone production and growth hormone production.
3. Nutrition
Chris and Heidi Powell recommend trying their "foundation five" rule. Rule number on one is tdrinking more water – about an extra quart of water every day. Your ultimate goal should be drinking half your body weight in ounces every day. Your next rules should be eating breakfast every day, adding protein to your diet, and limiting your intake of sugar and sodium.
Learning is tougher as we age, and so is burning calories and turning fat into muscle. But that doesn't mean you should give up!
