BALTIMORE - The New Year is a great time to focus on finding a new career. That means, cleaning up some of those party pictures on Facebook and Twitter.

“Because that would convey the kind of employee you’d be,” said Abel Communications President Greg Abel. “It’s not to say ‘everybody doesn’t have fun, but if you’re looking for a job, keep it PG rated.”

One of the best pieces of advice is keep what’s online as fresh as what’s on paper.

“Make sure you have an updated LinkedIn profile. It’s basically an online resume,” Greg said. “It cuts to the chase for companies looking for candidates because it allows them to very quickly get a snapshot of a candidate.”

Greg offers a few tips to spruce up your social media profiles.

1.   Consistency – Make sure all your social media platforms show the same work history.

2.   Professionalism – Convey the career you desire in your profiles. Don’t let party pictures overrun your social media persona.

3.   Check Privacy Settings – Make sure anything you wouldn’t want a potential employer to see is public.  

4.   Check Your References – Review your online posted recommendations. Make sure they present you in a positive light.
