How to work out without leaving your desk

Dr. Ray Hinish explains the heart healthy TrekDesk

OWINGS MILLS - “Welcome to Cut the Fat Podcast…my name is Dr. Ray Hinish,” said Owings Mills’ Ray Hinish as he talked into a microphone in his office studio.

He’s using his office computer. Did we mention it’s mounted on a treadmill? Dr. Ray works and walks daily on his TrekDesk.

“It’s basically a desk that has been designed to fit over a treadmill, so you can walk all day long,” said Dr. Ray.

On average you can burn about 150 to 200 calories an hour on the desk. Now imagine if you spent the entire day up here working. You could easily knock out about 800 calories a day. But if you don’t have a trekdesk, the secret to a healthy heart is staying active all day long and finding easy ways to exercise.

“The big misconception is that you have to work out for 60 to 90 minutes at a time to make a difference. The reality is, if we can get up every 30 minutes or so to get 60 to 90 seconds of activity that can make a difference,” said Dr. Ray. 

“Right in the office. Close the door so nobody sees you and just jump up and down for 60 to 90 seconds. And make sure that you’re out of breath.”
