Travel the world as a mom and a diplomat

PHOENIX - In the work world, sometimes you need a change of scenery. If you fall into that category, we've got a list of jobs you might like.

Many dream of traveling the world and getting paid for it. We found out about a career field that could have you traveling around the world with the State Department.

America's diplomatic force is looking for Foreign Service Officers.

People in these jobs are stationed at American embassies around the world as official representatives of our country. Specific duties vary from location to location, but could entail assisting the ambassador, planning cultural programs for locals or working with members of the local media. Some FSO's even volunteer for positions working alongside members of the military in places like Afghanistan.

The State Department does not require a specific skill or level of education as qualifications for the job, but you will have to take an exam. The test is similar to the ACT or the SAT college entrance exams and is offered several times each year.

Believe it or not, this line of work can be mom-friendly. Here's why:

  • Diplomats live with their families in their overseas assignments.
  • Housing is paid for by the department.
  • There children attend high quality schools.

If you want to learn more about family life in the foreign service, this website tells all.

Some might find the public diplomacy lifestyle unappealing.

If that's the case, Working Mother Magazine has a list of top mom-friendly industries.

Among the career areas on that list, education, online marketing and trades like plumbing can provide excellent opportunities for income and satisfaction.
