TAMPA, Fl. - It’s hard to imagine being behind the wheel of a $100,000 sports car when you’re working the gears on your Hyundai. But for those who’d like at least a taste of the good life, there is a company out there willing to hook you up. If only for a few laps around the track.
For a fee of a few hundred dollars – or far less if you can catch a Groupon or discount – a team of fire-breathing Ferrari experts will train you in the ways of their wheels, and then let you give them a test drive.
It’s not every day you get to see a Ferrari 360 Modena cruising around town, but on this day in St. Petersburg, about 50 novices got to take one for a ride. They got the experience of an autocross course, but not without a little instruction first. After all, the Ferrari 360 isn’t just any car.
“They’ll get to 60 miles per hour in about four seconds flat,” said Motorsport Lab driver Scott Major.“They can break from 60 miles per hour in less than a hundred feet.”
The course and instruction took place at St. Petersburg College’s Allstate Center ‘driving pad.’ This is a 60 to 90 minute experience, which includes a little education about the Ferrari, and some basic instruction.
Once the participants were briefed, the Motorsport driver took each person around the course one time. After that, excited speedsters slipped behind the wheel and took three rounds, with the Motorsport driver riding shotgun.
‘We see a lot of different driving abilities. Some scary, some not so much. Some that even impress us", said Major.
The Motorsport Lab is offering this unique driving experience in St. Petersburg through March.
