Meditation isn't just something you find at a hippy commune these days, Dan Harris of ABC's Good Morning America, thinks that it's the beginning of a public health revolution. “We're going to look at mental excursive the same way we now look at physical exercise.” he says. Dan wrote a whole book about it, and he gave Teresa Strasser three tips for meditating like a pro.
1. Get Comfortable
You really don't need to put yourself into a pretzel. You can just sit in a chair if you want, with your spine reasonably straight. It may help you avoid falling asleep. A lot of people close their eyes and some people leave their eyes slightly open, but Dan doesn’t close his eyes.
2. Feel Your Breathing
Bring your full attention to the feeling of your breath, coming in and going out. You're not thinking about your breath, you're just literally feeling the sensations of your breath coming in and going out.
3. Erase Distractions
As soon as you sit down and try to meditate, you're going to get distracted, and your mind will go crazy. The whole name of the game is just to notice when you become distracted, and to start again, again, and again. That really helps you in the world, when things don't always go your way.
Meditation isn't going to fix all of the problems in your life, it’s not going to make you taller, but it’s a great way to stay focused and clear minded. And with these three tips, you’ll be meditating like a pro in no time.
