The Breakdown: Sesame Street app explains divorce to kids

Sesame Street is about to hit one billion views on YouTube, making it the first nonprofit ever to reach that milestone.  And now, the show is capitalizing on its internet popularity by tackling the tough topic of divorce.

With 40 percent of all children experiencing this major transition, Sesame Street is taking it on with the help of both the web and fictional 3-year-old fairy-in-training Abby Cadabby.

Dr. Jeanette Betancourt helped Sesame Street craft material specifically for kids and their parents dealing with divorce.

She said the three things you need to emphasize to kids when telling them about divorce are:

1)      The divorce is not their fault.

2)      They’re still loved, and they still have two parents.

3)      It’s ok to have different feelings, and big ones.

This isn't the first time Sesame Street tackled the "d"- word.  Last time it traumatized test groups of preschool kids, so the material never aired. They retooled and took a whole new approach.
