Right now the United Nations estimates there are around 7.3 billion people in the world and by 2050 it will be 9.7 billion. Imagine all the food that it will take to feed that many people. Scientists all over the world have one solution and that is to create food that's animal-free. Kristina Guerrero, New Harvest’s Erin Kim and Finless Foods’ Mike Selden are looking at meat, fish and even dairy products that are being created in labs.
1. Cultured Meat
No, we're not talking Frankenstein here. It looks just like regular meat, but cultured meat is meat that's grown from outside the body of an animal. It's sort of like deconstructing that idea of meat and just growing all the different parts and somehow putting them all together in the end to create an edible product that fulfills the same nutritional and culinary purpose you would get from an animal.
Mike Selden is the co-founder of Finless Foods and he's planning to have his fish on the market in three years. He says his product is actually better for you than a lot of what's available now.
3. Dairy Products
We're talking about milk without a moo and eggs without a leghorn. It’s all in the cells. Perfect Day and Clara Foods are working on those products right now.
