3 Reasons the Pronunciation of Words Change
Lifestyle The ListWe hear so many variations on words when it comes to the English language. Who's right and who's wrong? Actually, everyone is a little bit right, and a little bit wrong. Jimmy Rhoades and professional dialect coach Erik Singer have three reasons the pronunciation of words change.
1. Dialect Variation
Depending on where you are from, you will probably say certain words different. For the most part different pronunciations on regional accents are accepted, even embraced.
2. Mistakes That Become Correct
Over time words change by mistake, but then become tha normally way to say them. If over half of the people saying a word, say it wrong, then are they actually wrong at that point? The jury is still out.
3. Sound Change
We're talking about phonemic merger here. Where two previously distinctive vowel classes merge together. The only proceed in one direction so in 50, 75 years, nobody will say that particular word differently.
