Family vacations can be pricey, which is probably why only about a third of us are going on them this year. If you have the itch to travel, but not the scratch, no worries, Kristina Guerrero and Traveling Mom’s Cindy Richards found ways you can get away without getting cleaned out.
1. Book Against the Season
Consider you might go skiing in Colorado in the winter, but if you go there in the summer when you can hike, bike, fish and do all kinds of outdoor stuff you can do it for half the price. Or you could Travel to Phoenix in the summer when it’s really hot and stay at places like the Arizona Biltmore for a couple hundred dollars a night. That’s some huge savings!
2. Ask to Match Best Price
There are a ton of apps and websites where can look for a really great deal on hotels like booking.com and hotels.com – so start there and look for the best deal on the hotel, but don’t book it. Call the hotel directly, not the 800 reservation number, call the front desk and ask them to meet whatever your best price is that you got. Then if you have a problem, you're dealing with the actual hotel and not a third-party. The hotel will almost always match the price.
3. To Fly or Drive
There's a great website called BeFrugal and they have a fly versus drive calculator where you can compare your trip's cost for free. If you have to fly then be sure to check neighboring airports for cheaper flights.
