4 film redos that keep coming back from the pastEntertainment The List
If something worked once you might as well do it again, at least that's what Hollywood thinks when it comes to making remakes. 2017 has 43 films getting a sequel, reboot, or remake. But not all of them are superhero films or action flicks. Grab your popcorn! Donna Ruko's got some of the classic films getting remade, from the totally obvious, to a few films you'd be surprised to see are on their third or fourth redo.
1. The Six Million Dollar Man
Surprise! Didn't know that the bionic man was getting his own modern movie? It won't be out for a bit, but Mark Wahlberg has been working tirelessly to get this movie made. But it wouldn't be the first time – Before we saw Steve Austin on our TVs every week, we first saw him on our TV screens with TV movies. The first film aired in 1973 and viewers saw astronaut Steve Austin transformed into the Six Million Dollar Man. Then came another in October of 1973, then the third in November of the same year. The show series started in January of 1974.
2. The Mummy
We all know The Mummy trilogy that captivated us in the years 1999, 2001, and 2008 and kept Brendan Fraser working, but did you know that the film was actually a remake from the Golden Age of Cinema? The first Mummy appeared in theaters at 1932 as a part of a series of films made for the Universal Monsters franchise. In that film, the Mummy escapes the archeologists to find his forbidden lover that he thinks has been reanimated and is walking the earth. We're all for a good love story…After that film, The Mummy was reworked 9 times between 1940 – 1971 and the 2017 film will be out this summer.
Some people weren't quite sure how they felt about the 2017 film adaptation of CHiPs with Dax Sheppard and Michael Peña, but what you can be sure of is that the rework isn't just an adaptation of the 1977-1983 TV series, but of a CHiPs TV movie as well. After the show's run ended, a TV Movie was made in 1998, one with a little more drama than the TV show as guns were used more prominently in the one movie than in the series.
3. A Star is Born
Lady Gaga fans know their Mother Monster has acting chops so they and many others are excited to see her in her first leading role in the reboot of this 1937 classic. The story tells the tale about what its like to make it big, then lose it all, in Hollywood. It was then remade again in 1976 with Kris Kristopherson and Barbara Streisand. With a legacy that long, Gaga and film co-star Bradley Cooper have a lot to live up to, but the 2017 film is sure to please fans of the film and the stars alike.
4. Ghost in the Shell
The Scarlett Johansson flick is the first live action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell, but back in 1995 an animated film based on the manga was released in Japanese theaters and then in the US on VHS. The 2017 film will draw most of its inspiration from the written manga. It's seen some controversy since people caught word of it, but we'd see Johansson in anything.
