Stress can make you sick, depressed, and even kill you. Just thinking about it is stressful. Some of the things that are stressing you out you don’t even know about. Now worries though, Brian Corsetti and Dr. Bettina Lehnert have four surprising reasons you might be stressed out and how you can fix them.
1. Saying Yes to Everything
Letting people down or guilt can cause massive amounts of anxiety. Set those boundaries and expect to get into a mini argument over it. Sure that's stressful, but it will prevent 100 more anxious situations in the future.
2. High Expectations for Yourself
Perfectionism makes for a super stressful existence. Does it matter the dishes aren't done that night? Be more compassionate and be ok making those mistakes, and set those same expectations with your friends.
3. Assuming Everyone is Paying Attention to You
Think everyone at the store notices you have a huge zit on your forehead? It’s your exaggerated sense of self-importance that will cause anxiety, but no one cares, so why should you?
4. Thinking Emotions Will Go Away by Suppressing
A fairly simple fix is to acknowledge what's in your control and what's out of your control. People in Thailand light themselves on fire to get rid of anxiety. That might fall under a gimmick or a cultural thing, but do whatever you think works.
