If you're on the market for new appliances, then the coming tariffs on washing machines, steel and aluminum could affect you. Prices on appliances are expected to sky rocket once these changes go into effect, so Consumer Expert Lisa Lee Freeman advices on using that tax refund on appliances now. Here are four ways to get the most bling for your cha-ching.

1. Prepare to Haggle

A lot of people don't realize that just like cars, appliances are also negotiable – even at those big chain stores. Do your research beforehand and compare prices online and in stores. And when you find the absolute lowest price, go to your local retailer and see if they're willing to negotiate. The sales person is also going to be more open to giving you a better deal if you're considering buying more than one appliance at a time.

2. Buy Open-Box Models

An "open-box" model is a model that was most likely sold and returned, or it might be a floor model that was out as a sample. "Open-box" models are often marked down 50 percent or more. You do want to take a close look at the product, to make sure there aren't any dents or dings. And if they are, you might be able to negotiate an even better price.

3. Check for the Energy Star Label

The Energy Star Label is a government certification that you're buying a very efficient model. And remember, with appliances, the cost isn't just the price you pay for the appliance – it's also the cost of running it, which translates to saving hundreds of dollars a year.

4. Skip the Warranty

Believe it or not, stores make lots of money on warranties, but rarely do they pay off for consumers. Most consumers never use one, and even if you do, the cost of the policy is probably going to be more than the cost of the repair. One thing to keep in mind is, a lot of credit cards offer extended warranties just by using your card to buy the item.

And if you have other plans for that tax refund right now, Memorial Day weekend is right around the corner. It's a great time to shop.

So, if getting a new fridge or a replacement for that old washing machine is on your radar, don't wait until you get hit with skyrocketing prices. Plan ahead and clean up on a deal ASAP.
