5 Knockout Things You Didn’t Know About RockyEntertainment The List
Monday marks the 40th anniversary of the classic film Rocky! It was the first sports movie to ever win an Academy Award for Best Picture! Lindsey Granger has five more things you didn't know about the film that made Sly Stallone a star.
1. Sylvester Stallone Almost Wasn’t Rocky
The movie studio liked Stallone's screenplay but they wanted the lead played by an established star like Ryan O'Neal, Robert Redford, James Caan or Burt Reynolds. Stallone held out. The studio relented, but cut the proposed budget in half, to $1 million. In the end the movie brought in 225 million!
2. Stock Footage Crowds
That budget didn't allow for a big enough crowd to fill the arena in the final fight scene so stock footage had to be added in editing. You can still see in some shots that some of the seats are empty.
3. Real Pet
The brawler's dog in the movie, Butkus, was Sylvester Stallone's dog in real life.
4. Almost Adrian
Susan Sarandon was considered for the role of Adrian, but it was decided she was too pretty. They also thought about Cher, but ultimately decided on Talia Shire.
5. Famous Meat Locker Scene
After eight hours of carcass-punching, Stallone's knuckle cracked and disappeared into his hand. He says he hasn't seen the knuckle since, but that it's worth it because he still has nine other knuckles to go with the 7 Rocky films.
