In late August 2016 JetBlue became the first U.S. airline to begin regular commercial flights to Cuba in more than 50 years. It used to be a huge vacation spot for Americans and now it’s back on the list! To get you ready for your travels there, Donna Ruko has five fun facts about República de Cuba.

1.  Educated

Cuba has a 99.8% literacy rate – one of the highest in the world.

2. No Playing Around

Fidel Castro didn't play games… Not even board games if they rewarded capitalism. When he seized power, one of his first decrees was to destroy all Monopoly games!

3. Free Ride

Because there aren't enough cars, government vehicles are legally required to pick up any hitchhiker.

4.  Presidential Cigars

President Kennedy’s advisor Pierre Salinger tells the story about the night JFK — who loved Cuban cigars – asked him to get as many as he could.

5.  Let It Be

Fidel Castro is such a huge fan of John Lennon that he decided Havana needed a park named after the former Beatle. He had a bronze sculpture of him commissioned.
