72nd Annual Tony Awards: The 4 Best Musicals Adapted from TV & FilmEntertainment The List
The nominees for the 72nd Annual Tony Awards have been announced, and remakes are owning the show. From Frozen to Harry Potter, here's a look at the remakes that are dominating this year's Tony Awards.
The Disney animated feature had everyone singing along when it hit theaters. And now Frozen is doing it again – this time on Broadway with a few new songs. "True Love" is one of the new numbers that helped the musical get three Tony nominations. Frozen also snagged a nom for Best Musical.
2. Mean Girls
This classic film-turned-play racked up 12 Tony nominations, and ties for the most of any musical this year – including one for the original screenwriter Tina Fey. The long-awaited Mean Girls musical features music by Jeff Richmond, lyrics by Neil Benjamin, and is based entirely on the eponymous 2004 film. It's also in the running for Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical, and Best Direction of a Musical.
3. SpongeBob SquarePants
Bikini Bottom is getting a life-size makeover on Broadway, along with some star power. Over 15 musicians contributed to the production, including John Legend, Cyndi Lauper and The Flaming Lips. If it wins for Best Score, it could get some of your favorite artists their first Tony.
4. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
J.K. Rowling introduced the world to Harry Potter over 20 years ago, then jumped off the pages and into a series of movies. Now, we get a peek at his life 19 years after he defeated Voldermort. It's the most expensive non-musical production ever to play on Broadway, and is nominated for 10 Tony Awards –including Best Play and Best Scenic Design.
Whether you want to explore Bikini Bottom with SpongeBob and Patrick; sit with The Plastics wearing pink; or sing along with Elsa and Olaf – Broadway is definitely coming in hot this year with something for everyone.
