Across America: 3 Weird Festivals in Colorado, Texas & LouisianaLifestyle The List
Food and wine festivals are fine, but what if you're feeling a little funky? Shake things up and get your freak on with these three bizarre festivals Across America.
1. Mike the Headless Chicken – Fruita, Colorado
Let's start in Fruita, Colorado for the Mike the Headless Chicken festival. This festival is a celebration of the amazing story of one chicken's will to live. In 1945, Farmer Lloyd Olsen picked a plump chicken for dinner. He grabbed his axe, but didn't quite finish the job, leaving Mike to live on for another 18 months. Since 1998, the town of Fruita has held this festival in ol' Mike's memory. The fiesta features fun events like a 5k run, wing eating contests, and live music. The party takes place on June first and second. Cluck cluck!
2. Texas SandFest – Port Aransas, Texas
After you lose your head having all that fun in Colorado, travel down south to Port Aransas for the Texas SandFest. This festival hosts the largest sand sculpture competition in the U.S. The three-day affair also offers live music, arts and crafts, and food. Rain or shine, the SandFest runs April 27th to the 29th.
3. Running of the Bulls
After you brush the sand off your feet, travel east to New Orleans, Louisiana for the Running of the Bulls. The 12th annual Running of the Bulls Charity pays homage to the world-famous Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain…but with a twist! Instead of bulls chasing runners through the streets, it's the Big Easy Rollergirls and other teams from across the country doing the chasing. They swat participants on the backside with plastic bats along a 12-block route through the French Quarter! The Nola Running of the Bulls stampedes through the streets from July 13th through the 15th.
