Beyond the Bun: 3 Crazy-Good Hot Dog RecipesFood The List
Even though it hails from Germany, the hot dog is a United States cultural treasure. Brian Corsetti has three crazy-good takes on this summertime favorite that will make you proud to be an American.
1. Squid Weenies
Create batter by mixing together 3/4 cup of pancake mix, two tablespoons of ketchup, two ounces of milk, and then stir until smooth. Next, cut some hot dogs in half and make three cuts on the bottom to create six legs. Now, dip them cut side up in the pancake mixture, and deep fry them until they're golden brown and the legs uncurl. Use mayo as glue, cheese and nori to make little faces and you have a snack so adorable you won't know whether to eat it or hug it.
2. Hairy Dogs
Cut the ends off a few hot dogs and stick dry pasta into the top. Now boil them up… When the pasta is cooked take them out and use mustard to draw cute faces on them.
3. Sushi Dog
First, cut the edges off a few pieces of white bread. Next, place nori on a sushi mat and cover it in two layers of white bread. Now, put enough cooked hot dog to run along the edge and start rolling. Make sure to tuck the edge into the bread as you roll it out. Cut it up and it's ready to serve. All you need is a little mustard and ketchup.
That’s three delicious and strange ways to take your hot dog to the next level.
