David Hasselhoff Reveals How to Build a Personal Brand with 3 TipsInterview Top of the List
David Hasselhoff is a man who’s done it all: slow motion runs on the beach; crime-fighting in a futuristic supercar; and even performing in front of thousands of people. So we caught up with him to learn how to build a personal brand in three steps.
1. No Role is Too Small
The first tip on how to build a personal brand? Know that no role is too small. “I’m pretty much known as David Hasselhoff the entertainer, and I do whatever’s put in front of me,” says the living legend. And by that he means literally anything – from a guest appearance on the Dance Star videogame to a Clorox commercial. He’s even booked a gig as the official mayor of Funner, California. And, yes, that’s a real place!
2. Poke Fun at Yourself
And if seeing David Hasselhoff in all of those ads doesn’t give it away, his second piece of advice on how to build a personal brand is to poke fun at yourself. “I was on the phone with my agent,” says the Hoff. “He goes, they want you to be in SpongeBob. I said, what’s that? He goes, I don’t know.” Inspired by his kids to take the job, he wasn’t afraid to slip back into his swim trunks for a hilarious cameo and make fun of himself.
3. Embrace the Spotlight
His last piece of advice on how to build a personal brand? Embrace the spotlight! “Michael Knight from Knight Rider is one of my biggest roles and one of my most popular,” admits Hasselhoff. “The show, the look, the car was all so iconic.” So iconic, in fact, it gets him noticed even in the most uncommon places. “No matter where I go, even when I go down to Calabasas to buy groceries, people stop me and go, I love you man!,” he notes. And he knows how to handle each fan encounters with graciousness. “They all have an amazing story of their childhood and how Knight Rider or Baywatch affected them in a positive way,” adds the actor. Aww!
