Dollar Store Hacks: 4 Ways to Save Money at 99 Cent StoresDeals The List
Shopping at dollar stores is a bargain alone. But believe it or not, there are tricks you can use to amp up the savings even more. Consumer expert Lee Freeman says dollar stores are one of the fastest growing retail categories. And with the four major chains – Family Dollar, Dollar Tree, Dollar General, and 99 Cents Only – competing for your business, chances are they’ll be offering even greater deals to help you stretch your dollars further. To help maximize your savings, here are four hacks you can use next time you push your cart inside the discount store.
1. Shop for the Essentials
We’re talking eggs, milk, bread, etc. Dollar stores are a great place to pick up these grocery staples. You can get amazing deals, but you’ve got to do the math first. Pull out your phone and calculate a product’s per-ounce per unit prices. For example, 18 eggs for $2.49 is essentially 14 cents per egg. If you multiply that times 12, you get $1.66 for a dozen eggs, which gives you a pretty decent price. All we can say is – sold!
2. Bring Your Coupons
You’d be surprised by how many dollar stores accept manufacturer coupons now, and many of even offer their own store coupons. In some cases, you’re allowed to combine the two. In other cases, you have to watch out for restrictions, like limits on stacking. But even small coupons can make a big difference in your total. A 20-cent coupon might seem insignificant, but at the dollar store, that equals a 20 percent discount.
3. Dollars are Digital
Lots of dollar store shoppers never think to go to the stores’ websites. Online, you can find fliers, special deals, digital coupons — and even sign up for e-mail alerts so you know when to pay the store a visit. That’s because dollar store sales usually only last for a couple of days, maybe a week, so it’s super easy to miss out on them.
Some of the national dollar store chains even have apps. For example, Family Dollar’s official app lets you get digital coupons and check out weekly ads to see what’s on sale.
4. Shop the Dollar Store Brands
The store brands at the dollar store could be about 25 percent cheaper than the supermarket store brands – it’s amazing! For example, Dollar General has Clover Valley brand, which includes crackers, soda, coffee, and so much more. This tip doesn’t necessarily apply to smaller, regional or mom-and-pop dollar stores. But the four national chains are one of the hottest categories in retail, so they’re offering all the amenities.
If you thought bargains couldn’t get any better than the dollar store, think again. The top national chains are getting more and more competitive to get you the best prices on your favorite items, which can only mean good news for your budget.
