Go Green: 3 eco-friendly booze companiesFood The List
Reuse, reduce, recycle is so 2016 – especially when it comes to eco-friendly beer & booze production. This year it's all about repurposing, redirecting and regraining. Jared Cotter has three companies making a difference with each pour.
1. Stone Brewery
San Diego’s Stone Brewery starts us off with a repurposed beer crafted from treated wastewater to prove that it is safe and tasty with their Full Circle pale ale. It's said to be a very clean tasting beer and before you cringe, just know that this water is cleaner than the tap water you drink now. Stone does not use this water in any of its products available to the public. The Full Circle beer was a onetime release brewed as a way to promote San Diego's goal of a sustainable water supply.
2. Ventura Spirits
They take ugly strawberries that are still sound and usable fruit, ferment them and distil them into vodka called California Vodka. To date they have saved about 500 thousand pounds of ugly strawberries that would have gone to waste and if you're wondering, the vodka’s flavor does taste like strawberries. California Vodka is available in some stores and online.
3. O.H.S.O. Eatery & Nano-Brewery
Finally, we're getting regrained with some help from rover. This brewery is using spent grain to create tasty dog treats. They got started because they make their own beer and decided to do something with all the leftover grain. They make 15 thousand of these treats a week, and if there's any grain leftover they actually donate it to local farms.
Big thanks to Anthony Garcia corporate executive chef O.H.S.O. Eatery & Nano-Brewery!
