Great Deals! The 3 best things to buy in AugustDeals The List
We're still in the golden glory of summer, but as July ends you can feel it the looming shadow of September, when the barbeques and beach days come to an end. There's only one answer — retail therapy! Jimmy Rhoades and Rather Be Shopping’s Kyle James have more on how you can save big this month.
1. End of Season Sales
Most home improvement stores want to get rid of outdoor stuff so they're going to mark it down big time. You can typically find 30 to 40 percent off patio furniture, barbecues. Add lawn mowers to the list of big stuff, and don't forget smaller end-of-season items like summer clothes and swimwear.
2. Office Supply Stores
Check out your local office supply stores, like Staples and Office Depot. In years past they've offered some great deals on things like pencils for a penny and even notebooks for 10 cents. They don't have a lot of inventory and these items are loss leaders. That means a product they'll sell at a loss to get you in the door, in hopes you'll buy other stuff. The only problem is they sell out really quickly because they don't carry a lot of something they're losing money on. Since back to school sales include dorm supplies it's a great time to stock up on stuff for your home like lamps, space savers and bath towels.
3. Shop Tax-Free
Many states offer a tax-free shopping weekend in the month of August. The idea is to offer families a discount equal to the state's tax rate on back-to-school shopping. You know, 7, 8 percent right off the top. So if you're shopping for something big, like a laptop, it's a really great way to save. There are limits by category to what you can purchase tax free.
