Grocery Hacks: 3 Foods You Should Only Buy On SaleDeals The List
There's nothing better than going grocery shopping and finding some of your listed items on sale. Planning your grocery trips around certain sales is smart shopping, but there's more to it than working the weekly flier. Consumer expert Lisa Lee Freeman has three boxes to check for things you should only buy when they're on sale.
Some things to look out for include pricier items; items that get marked down really big during sales; and products that last a long time in the freezer or in the pantry.
1. Meat & Poultry
Meat is one of the most expensive items on your grocery list. And when it goes on sale, it goes on sale big. We're talking 50 percent off or more. Chicken and meat can be stored for up to a year in the freezer without losing their taste or texture. Some meats last longer than others. We're talking whole chicken, chops, steaks, roasts – these are great things to buy on sale.
Cheese can also be pricey, so when it goes on sale, it'll be marked down by 50 percent or more. When those prices drop, load up on as much as you can so you can hold out until the next sale – which may take a few months. It's like living in an underground bunker as part of a doomsday cult. Except instead of waiting for end times, you're waiting for a sale on Velveeta!
Regarding storage, cheese actually freezes very well. You can freeze some cheese for six months before it starts losing its flavor and texture. The best cheeses to freeze are hard block cheeses, like parmesan, cheddar and Swiss.
3. Canned Food
Did you know February is National Canned Food month? Who would've thought! This means you're going to be seeing tons of sales. And when you stock up, you've got to stock up big, because they last for five years in your cabinet. Unless of course there is something acidic in the can. So, tomato-based soups and sauces may only last for about eighteen months.
Another thing to consider when it comes to canned food is to make sure that the cans themselves don't have any dents on them.
Given the option of paying full price or buying something on sale, of course we'll take the one with the discount! So, fill that shopping cart and stock up on the items you should only buy on sale.
