Poor gut health could be the reason you’re feeling exhausted and run down. There’s a chance it has nothing to do with your sleep habits. It could be because your gut isn’t producing the kind of good bacteria that gives you energy, which has a lot to do with what you’re feeding it. The List spoke to nutritionist Dawn Jackson Blatner who’s sharing a gut health guide that will keep your gut healthy.
One of the foods you should stay away from to improve your gut health is sugar. If you eat sugar, it is very hard for the good bacteria to live. So the more sugar you eat, the more bacteria is growing. The more bacteria in your body, the more you’ll feel tired. “The thing is, sugar isn’t limited to your usual suspects like candy, cookies or ice cream,” Jackson explains. It even lurks in condiments like ketchup and barbecue sauce, or your favorite fruit yogurts.”
2. White Flour
If you’re feeling fatigued, check what kind of flour your food is made with. White flour is one of those things that’s everywhere! We’re talking things like white rice, white pasta, white bread – all of these things have no fiber. Good bacteria feeds off of fiber, so when we eat a lot of those foods that don’t have fiber, those good bacteria really can’t survive. So make sure your diet includes a variety of foods that contain whole wheat, whole barley and whole oats – things your gut health will thank you for.
Have you ever heard of a meat coma?It’s a real thing! Meat can actually create fatigue. “When you think about meat, it has no fiber and it creates more of an acidic environment in our gut,” Jackson shares. “No fiber and more acid is not a good place for bacteria.” And if you don’t want to give up on those steaks and chops, don’t worry! There are healthy alternatives like fish, which is high in omega-3, which can actually help grow good bacteria in your gut.
