Hot Cocoa Alert: 3 Best Hot Chocolate Spots Across AmericaFood The List
Sweet steam rising to meet you. Liquid happiness warming you up from the inside. Americans love their hot chocolate! Get your marshmallows ready, because we’re visiting three of the best places to drink hot chocolate across America.
1. Jacques Torres – New York City
The first stop on our list is Jacques Torres in New York City. The chocolatier is known for his innovative creations, but he’s also famous for his hot chocolate! Jacques offers his classic hot chocolate, and then there's his “wicked” hot chocolate. "I went to Mexico [and] learned about spices that they use there,” Jacques explains about his concoction. “And I mix that with spices that we use in Europe." Allspice, cinnamon, and ancho and chipotle chilies give the “wicked” hot chocolate a big kick. We’ll take a cup to go, please!
2. Mindy’s Hot Chocolate and Dessert Bar – Chicago, Illinois
Our next stop is Chi-town, the home of Mindy’s Hot Chocolate and Dessert Bar. A James Beard Award winner, Mindy Segal's Hot Chocolate is a full-service restaurant, but its signature item is hot chocolate with house-made marshmallows. Mindy's has an everchanging menu, including some spiked hot chocolate choices! What’s Mindy’s secret to success? “We think about the dessert first, and then we think of everything else, which is unusual,” says the founder. Dessert first? Now there’s an idea we can get behind!
3. Askinosie Chocolate – Springfield, Missouri
Finally, take a look at Askinosie Chocolate in Springfield, Missouri. "We source our cocoa beans directly from farmers around the world,” says founder Shawn Askinosie. “And then we share our profit with the farmers that we buy our beans from." Singled out by Orpah for his philanthropy, Shawn takes students to countries like Tanzania to teach them about sustainable and organic farming. "Organic cocoa beans and organic sugar – we don't put anything else in it,” he says of his chocolate. And the same goes for his hearty "sipping chocolate". "People can mix cream or milk into this, and it's a really decadent, almost dessert-like drink,” he adds. We’d never turn down a cup of cocoa that doubles as good cause!
