Bravo‘s reality show Million Dollar Listing follows luxury real estate agents around the city of New York – and it’s going into its eighth season sometime this year. We spoke with the star of the show, Ryan Serhant, who shared three secrets on how to start a small business.

1. Who Is Your Market?

Ryan’s first tip on how to start small a business? Determine your market! Whatever your business is, you have to have a demographic. Are you selling to kids and adults? Men and women? “A lot of people start small businesses and they say, I’m gonna do this to the world! or I’m gonna go nationwide or, I’m gonna hit everybody,” says Ryan. “And they don’t actually sit down and write down who their core demographic is. It saves you a lot of time, and it’ll actually make you that much more successful that much quicker.” Duly noted!

2. Leverage Yourself

Ready for the next tip on how to start a small business? “My second piece of advice would be to figure out how to leverage yourself,” suggests Ryan. We think we can do it all, but Ryan says that you’ve got to focus on your strengths and then turn to others for help on the rest. “When I started my business, I felt the same way. But as soon as I brought on […] one admin, and then a handful of other agents to work underneath me, and I let them grow with me – yes, I wasn’t making as much money or pulling as much profit off the table, but my business grew ten-fold,” adds Ryan. Good to know!

3. Get Creative

Ryan’s last tip on how to start a small business? Get creative! “You can sell things now through YouTube,” informs the real estate mogul. “You know, I just sold a townhouse for $13 million through YouTube, and sales is my passion, and I could do that in a really, really, really creative way.” Whether it’s through social media or another outlet that you have at your disposal, you’ve gotta figure out how to get yourself out there and get noticed. “I’ve got my vlog on YouTube, which I never used to talk about. But now it’s become such an important part for my business,” says Ryan.
