Instant Coffee is Trending – 3 Reasons Coffee Snobs Will Drink It!Lifestyle The List
Instant coffee has a stigma in the U.S., and many Americans go for bougie Starbucks or fresh-brewed from the local corner shop. But all that may be changing! New manufacturing techniques, better ingredients, and convenient packaging may have you skipping the coffee shop and tearing open a package of instant, caffeinated bliss instead. We spoke with Bryant Powell, barista at Luci’s Healthy Marketplace, who taught us all we need to know about the instant coffee comeback.
1. Higher Quality
The first thing you need to know is today's instant coffees are higher quality than the mass-produced, old school stuff. "They're freeze drying all of their coffee now,” reveals Bryant. “No oxygen is getting into this – this is the killer of all things coffee.” Brands like Voila and Stoked Stix are using these techniques to help win over our inner coffee snob. Voila even offers a subscription service for about $16 a month, while you can find Stoked Stix on Amazon for about $9 for an 8-pack.
2. Instant Coffee Has Less Caffeine
Next up, if you're trying to dial down that caffeine intake, instant can be a good choice. “They're actually going to decrease the caffeine on these guys 25%,” shares Bryant. “It's not going to be like Luci's, which is 188 milligrams per cup.” Instant coffee has less caffeine due to the manufacturing process. “But still, you're going to get a really great taste, and a little caffeine buzz,” our expert assures.
3. Adds a Kick When Cooking
Finally, you can use instant coffee to give your baked goods and smoothies extra flavor – and a kick! And when it comes to baking, instant coffee won't throw off your ratios with eggs and milk – you just need a little.
As you can see, instant coffee has come a long way from the stuff your 90-year-old aunt used to drink. Next time you’re at the grocery store, pick up some instant java and give it try!
