Mermaids Are Trending: 3 Ways to Add Color & Whimsy to Your LifeLifestyle
Mermaids are trending…again! Just when we thought the days of mermaid-inspired trends were over, they’re back and better than ever. So we’re showing you three ways the mermaid trend is swimming back into our lives!
1. Mermaid Food and Drinks
First on our list? The renaissance of mermaid food and drinks! Co-owner of The Quartiere, Rochelle Geryol, showed us how to make mermaid pizza. Get the recipe below! And while that cooks, make a mermaid-inspired drink by mixing prosecco and edible glitter.
3.5 – 4 cups flour
1 tsp. sugar
1 packet instant dry yeast
2 tsp. salt
1.5 cups warm water
2 tbsp. + 2tsp olive oil
Combine flour, sugar, yeast and salt in a stand mixer and blend.
While the mixer is running, add water and two tablespoons of olive oil. Mix until dough forms into a ball. If the dough is sticky, add more flour one tablespoon at a time until it comes together. Scrap dough onto a lightly-floured surface and knead until smooth and firm.
Put dough into a bowl greased with remaining olive oil. Cover and place in a warm space to rise.
When it has doubled in size (about 1 hour), turn dough out onto floured surface. Divide it into two equal pieces. Cover each and let rest for 10 minutes.
Roll or hand toss dough into pizza to fit a 14-inch pan. Top with desired mermaid toppings like red tomato sauce, orange and yellow peppers, pepperoni, purple potatoes, and basil or spinach.
*All toppings can be raw except for potatoes. Pre-cook potatoes by slicing and roasting in the oven for about 20 minutes.
Cook pizza in a 400-degree oven until cheese is bubbly and crust is golden brown – about 10-12 minutes.
2. Mermaid Clothes and Hair
Next up is mermaid clothes and hair! Remember when The Little Mermaid was the biggest movie out? Well, it turns out…dressing up like Ariel is now a trend! And the look comes in several silhouettes – like dresses, denim, and even socks and shorts for the mermen. Celebs like singer Alicia Keys, model Gigi Hadid, and rapper Cardi B have all rocked their versions of the look.
3. Mermaid Home Decor
And the final sea-inspired trend is mermaid home décor. “You can definitely add mermaid elements throughout the house in a very sophisticated and elegant manner,” says design expert and art consultant Julie Muniz. One way to do this is to add pastel water colors like purple, blue, turquoise, and sea green into your home! “Once you’ve added color, you can go for a little bit of shimmer,” adds Julie. “Sometimes it’s fun adding a bit of a textile that has a pearl essence to it. Or if you really want to go glam, go with actual glitter and sparkle.” And don’t forget the sea shell accents!
The mermaid trend is floating through 2018, and now you’ve got three ways to incorporate it into your life.
