It’s officially okay for adults to watch films geared toward young ones and find our inner child. We stopped by the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art with the President of Pixar, Jim Morris, to find out why adults flock to see kid films.

1. Humor

First up, it’s all about sneaking in some adult humor. “There’s certainly a lot of things in Up about the experience of Carl Fredrick, the old man,” shares Jim. “You want to have a range of richness that speaks to a lot of people and entertains on many levels.” We couldn’t agree more!

2. Diversity

Next up, films are diversifying and bringing in new audiences – like the Oscar-winning movie Coco which is centered around the Mexican holiday Día de Los Muertos. “Doing the research and feeling the soul of the Mexican people really touched us, and we wanted to capture that,” explains Jim.

The head honcho also opens up about why the company consults with archaeologists and cultural experts when producing films. “When we do a film that is about an ethnicity of culture that’s not our own, we feel an even greater affirmative obligation to really dig into it, and get the people there to actually contribute and help guide us.” The U.S. Census Bureau finds that diversity is on the rise each year, so Jim says inclusion is key. “It’s really important to us both ethically, and also from a business point of view. It makes good sense to tell stories that appeal to the broadest range of audiences.”

3. Relationships

And finally, for an adult to love a kid film, it must have a central relationship. “In the movies we love[…], there’s an emotional core in them; something about the way the characters interact that speaks to all of us,” Jim offers. He also says that even in action and superhero movies, the main characters center their relationships with different people in their lives.
