If you’re looking to give plant-based food a try, here’s a great place to start: Palak Patel, Food Network Star and Chef and Owner of Dash & Chutney In Atlanta, has three plant-based faux “fried chicken” recipes so mouth-watering you might not miss the meat!

Starting off with a Southern Friend Chicken Sandwich, Indian Style.

Start with a meat substitute — Palak’s favorite is called Daring — and a vegan buttermilk, simply made with alternative milk and lemon juice.  Add salt and spices and marinate — then dredge in flour mixed with Indian spices and deep fry like you would with regular chicken.  Pop it on a fresh roll with mayo, lettuce and tomato and enjoy!

Next up — Popcorn Chicken!

For this, Palak likes using soy curls or chicken bion.   Mix with a vegan egg and some spiced flour and deep fry.  Serve with lemon mayo or the sauce of your choice.

Last up — Chicken Chopped Salad

This time the chicken substitute is shiitake mushrooms, coated in a vegan egg base and dipped in panko, garlic powder, paprika, oregano and a classic italian seasoning.  Pop them in the fryer, then add to your salad and finish with your favorite toppings.

That’s three dishes letting the meat fly the coop — for the full recipes, head to
