Napping isn't just for babies. Studies say a quick rest has been proven to boost creativity and alertness. Lindsey Granger and sleep expert Dr. Michael Breus have three brilliant hacks to take your nap game to the next level.
1. Drink Coffee
After you drink it, it's going to take a little time, somewhere between 15-20 minutes for it to get into your blood stream and get to your brain. That's the perfect amount of time to take a nap. A 6 ounce cup of coffee mixed with a power nap should give you energy to stay alert for 4 extra hours.
2. Nourish Yourself
It turns out that tart cherries have a very high level of melatonin. Melatonin is kind of that key that starts the engine for sleep. You can also try milk. You'll need to drink a gallon and a half to get sleep inducing effects, but luckily a small glass of milk brings back memories of childhood. Most people remember those warm feelings they got when drinking that milk and that's what makes people sleepy at night. Dr. Breus says things like oatmeal and almonds will fill you up and give off a carbohydrate effect making you tired as well.
3. Set the Clock
Even just 10-15 minutes of a quick nap can be fairly helpful in making people more alert and more refreshed and 25 minutes equals a true power nap. If you have 60 minutes there's data to suggest that it can improve your memory as well as creativity. The time of day makes a difference for how long you should nap. For 60 or 90 minute naps you're really not going to want to do that anywhere past 1:30-2 p.m. The 10-15 minute naps you can do all the way up to about 4:30-5 p.m.
