Skateboarding Basics: 4 easy tips to get startedLifestyle The List
Statistics show there are more than 11 million skateboarders worldwide and it's never too late to learn. Lindsey Granger and skate coach Nicole Pothen have four basic tips to get you started with this fun and exciting sport.
1. Suit Up Properly
You're going to want jeans just in case you're falling so you’re not getting the skin. Use knee pads, elbow pads and helmet as well. More than likely you will fall and so protect yourself.
2. Push Like You Are Gliding
It's like canoeing — you push to the side — same thing with a skateboard. You want to make sure you're on the side of the board, giving it a push rather than right in front because your foot will clip the front of it. Just make sure you practice a few times before skating off into the sunset.
3. Use Your Back Foot as a Break
If you want to slow down then make sure you still have one foot on the board. You’re going to take the foot you push off your back foot and you want to stop with that foot. You can ease into a stop or you can just stomp it down and stop.
4. Get Fancy Later
We all dream of having skills like Tony Hawk, but it’s all about safety. Don't get too fancy with tricks until you're ready. Think about if you were hiking, you're not going to start on Mount Everest. You have to take baby steps.
