Surfboard workouts are trending, and specialty gyms offering this activity are popping up all over the country. So we spoke with Claire Sawyer, a trainer at City Surf Fitness in Arizona, to learn more about this gnarly way to exercise. Read on for three things you should know about this health and wellness trend.
1. Not Just for Surfers
The first thing to know is this workout is not just for surfers. “You don’t need to have any experience at all,” says Claire. So anyone of any skill level looking for a new way to workout can test the waters. No wonder this fitness trend is making such a splash! “[People] come out feeling refreshed, energized, they get those endorphins going – and they’re just excited to try something else besides working out at the gym which some people say are boring.” Sign us up!
2. Full Body Workout
Next, it’s for more than strengthening your land legs – you’ll get a full body workout! “You’re constantly using your core,” shares Claire. “So if you imagine most functional movements you would do at the gym – anything with dumbbells, kettle bells, resistance bands; just adding the element of an unstable surface.” And you can combine that traditional workout gear with the surfboard, too. The surfboard is there to teach you to balance, and to force you to use muscles you didn’t even know you had!
3. Oceans of Benefits
And finally, there are oceans of benefits. “You’re burning calories during your workout more,” informs Claire. “And then after your workout, your muscles are recuperating and using themselves more post-workout – so you actually burn more calories throughout the day than a traditional weightlifting and cardio exercise.” And in addition to the workout, you’re laughing, giggling, smiling – and you’re slightly embarrassed in the best way possible!
