The Holderness Family burst onto the scene in Christmas jammies – and with their hilarious parodies and original songs, who wouldn’t love them? We caught up with Penn, Kim, Lola and Penn Charles, who shared three secrets to keeping their family and relationship strong.

1. The Holderness Family on Housework

First up – get real about housework. “When you think that you are doing 50% of the cleaning, if you’re a guy, you’re doing 20% of the cleaning,” jokes Penn, the Holderness family patriarch. Penn says guys tend to prorate their work. “I realize that I have to think that I’m doing between 75% and 80% of the work to actually be doing 50% of the work…while our wives are essentially doing much more than us.”

2. Let Your Kids Be Bored

The next key to a healthy household? Kim Holderness says let your kids be bored: “Today I did what my mother did to me in the 80s which is, I don’t care what you do, just go outside.” The Holderness family also encourages creative craft time over screen time. “We have crafting supplies, art supplies all around…Our kids are eight and 11, and they don’t have cell phones yet. We’re trying to put that off as long as we can.”

3. Before You Criticize, Give Three Compliments

And the final way to a harmonious homestead? Before you criticize, give three compliments. “We know it well enough now that as soon as she gets to the second compliment – I’m like, here comes the hammer,” reveals Penn. But doing this helps keep their relationship strong. “It affirms the positive feelings that you have for your spouse, before you get into something that’s not so positive. And if you just keep your eye on the prize, we love each other.” Aw! We love you guys, too.
