The Origins Of 3 Popular Christmas TraditionsLifestyle The List
Tis the season to bust out those Christmas lights, put up the tree and hang the stockings, but where did those traditions come from? We did some research and found some interesting origin stories for some of our favorites.
3. Christmas Stockings
This one comes from an old Christmas story about a man who had three daughters but no money for them to get married. Legend has it, Saint Nick tossed three bags of gold directly into stockings which where hung by the fireplace to dry.
2. Christmas Tree
Our modern Christmas tree comes from Germany, way back in the 1500's to 1800's, but historians believe it was pagans who first worshipped trees. Branches of the evergreens around the house were thought to lift spirits during winter solstice.
3. Christmas Lights
Fancy German families in the 18th century decorated their trees with candles by securing them to branches using melted wax. Electric Christmas lights didn't catch on until the 1930's and they weren't used outside of homes until the 1950's.
