If a film comes and goes from the theater quickly, it usually means it’s not very good. But sometimes there’s a hidden gem that doesn’t get the attention it deserves. Film critic Dan Murrell of Screen Junkies has a list of three underrated movies you should watch ASAP.

1. Hello, My Name is Doris

The first fairly recent hidden gem on Dan’s list is Hello, My Name is Doris. “It’s such a sweet movie,” says Dan. “Sally Field I think should have been given major awards consideration. It’s one of the best performances of her career.” This is one of those underrated movies that’s a real tear-jerker, too! “It addresses these themes of rediscovering who you are, rediscovering what kind of a person you are later in life. I think it’s something people – even if they’re not at that stage of life – can relate to,” adds Dan.

We actually spoke to Sally when the movie was first released and she agreed that the movie is definitely relatable. “It’s such a unique story and such a unique character,” said the legendary actress. “But it’s universal because it talks about coming of age, and all of us were coming of age…That’s what we do in life.” Amen, girl!

2. The Edge of Seventeen

Now on to a coming of age story with a much younger main character that also released back in 2016. The Edge of Seventeen lands at number two on our roundup of most underrated movies, and Dan explains why! “This film really focuses on character and focuses on getting you to empathize with the characters in the story,” shares our film expert. “It’s funny and it’s relatable. And with so many teenage movies, it can be tough to weed out what’s the generic studio fare and which is actually worth your time – and The Edge of Seventeen is one that’s absolutely worth your time.”

We spoke to the movie’s star Hailee Steinfeld when it came out and she told us that there’s something for everyone in it. “This movie truly is […] a representation of what it really feels like to be a teenager,” said the star. “I do find there’s something in this character. If there’s not something in this character, there’s something in another character that people will find and relate to.” Good to know!

3. Green Room

And the last of recent underrated movies on Dan’s list is also from 2016, but it’s a lot more intense than his first two picks: Green Room. “This is not a movie for everyone,” advises Dan. “It is tough, it is gritty, it is brutal. But if you are a fan of the genre – suspense, thriller, horror – I think you’ll really enjoy it. It may be a title you haven’t heard of and it features a really chilling supporting performance by Patrick Stewart.”
