2017 has been the year of the mermaid: Mermaid toast, frappuccinos, leggings...but how do you actual mermaids feel about all this? Do they really drink Starbucks and eat toast? Teresa Strasser thought she'd #AskAMermaid and get to the bottom of the mermaid fascination with Thalia, a real life mermaid from Wands and Wishes. Oh, yeah - mermaids are real. And The List can get in touch with them...no big deal.
How do mermaids make...?
Mermaids do a lot of swimming so they need a lot of energy. Put some mermaid oomph in your day with Mermaid Toast:
First, grab your preferred amount of plain cream cheese and put it into a container.
Next, add your preferred mermaid-colored food coloring (blue and green are a good way to go but you can also get pink in your cream cheese by using beet juice; yellow with turmeric root, and purple with blueberry powder). You can also increase the health factor in your mermaid mix by adding blue-green algae powder.
Mix up the coloring and your cream cheese until you get a marble-like color pattern.
Spread the colored cream cheese onto a piece of toast and add edible gold stars, gold-leaf flakes, or pastel sprinkles.
But, how can I put the "sea" in my frappuccino? (heh...sea as in "C"...nevermind):
The Starbucks shops under the sea have this drink on the regular menu, obviously, but up on land it's only on Starbucks' secret menu, so if you want one, you'd better call ahead to make sure they have the needed ingredients.
Pink, blue, and purple food dye
Canned coconut milk
Vanilla Bean ice cream
Matcha Green Tea powder
Edible food gel (green is preferred)
Teal sanding sugar
In a blender, put 3 scoops of your ice cream, 1/2 a cup of whole milk, 1 teaspoon of sugar, and 1 tablespoon of coconut milk, and half a cup of ice. Blend until the mixture is at a frappuccino consistency.
Once the mixture is looking frappuccino-y, add in a few drops of purple food coloring. Blend the mixture again until it becomes purple. Pour the purple mix into a glass, then put it into the freezer.
Repeat these first two steps again (putting the ice cream, milk, sugar, milk, and ice into your blender) but add a few drops of pink food coloring at the end. Blend, then put the pink mix into another glass and put it into the freezer.
Repeat the first two steps again, but add a few drops of blue food coloring at the end. Blend, then put in the freezer.
Repeat the first two steps again (last time, we promise!), but add a scoop of Matcha powder. Blend until the mixture turns green. Then add some more drops of your blue food coloring and blend to make a teal colored mixture. At this point, you should have 4 different colored frapp mixes.
Grab a serving cup and put in 2-3 scoops of your green frapp. Then, add a thin layer of your pink frapp to the cup, followed by 2-3 scoops of your purple frapp. Top off the rest of the cup with your blue frapp (and you can always change the proportions for your preferred mermaid colors). As it starts to melt, the colors will mix into a cool mermaid cascade.
Top your frapp colors with whipped cream, then drizzle the sparkle gel on top. Sprinkle on some of your bead/pearl sprinkles. Then top the drink off with your teal sanding sugar.
And enjoy! You earned it with all that work...
How can I get my mermaid buzz on?
Catch a buzz in your net with this Mermaid Mule!
Pour 1.5 ounces of vodka into a cup full of ice.
Squeeze half a lime into the cup, followed by some ginger beer.
Splash a floater of Blue Curacao on top and stir.
Then garnish with a lime and cherry.
These don't come with mermaid sea shells but after a few of these drinks you might end up with some.
