What is a Cannoli?
If you’re asking yourself what is a cannoli?, here’s a simple explanation. Basically, it’s a deep fried pastry shell stuffed with a sweet cream filling. Gino says they’re the ultimate finger food!
What is in a Cannoli?
Now, you might be wondering what is in a cannoli. “All the cannolis are made with ricotta cream, sweet cream that we import from Sicily,” says Gino. “Then we do confectioner’s sugar and then whatever flavor we’re adding in.” Sounds delicious, right? Read on for a few of our favorite ways to enjoy cannolis.
If you haven’t tried Nutella-filled Cannolis, you haven’t lived! “Nutella is a very popular chocolate spread in Sicily,” says Gino. “It came about when they had the war in Italy and chocolate was in short supply, so they needed a way to stretch it out so they started using hazelnuts.” Now, using Nutella is second nature for Italians, but the same goes for Americans, since we love to to add this spread to many desserts! So why not a cannoli? “You just scoop it out and scoop it inside the cannoli shell,” instructs Gino. “Then once you have it over here, you take it and you get a little powdered sugar, and there’s your finished cannoli!” We can’t wait to try these at home!
Next up are Oreo-filled cannolis – because who doesn’t like cookies and cream?! Gino says this version combines an American favorite with an Italian favorite, so everyone is happy! Once you’ve loaded in your Oreo stuffing, take the dessert to the next level with some chocolate sprinkles. One bit of this and you’ll be saying double-stuffed oreos, who?! in no time!
And, finally, if one cannoli just isn’t enough, get a giant one to satisfy your sweet tooth! Gino recommends a fun flavor combination like cookie butter and strawberry. Then get crazy with the toppings! We chose hazelnut and rainbow sprinkles. Gino says this masterpiece feeds up to four people…if you feel like sharing, that is!
